A priori

definition

A priori is a latin word, in opposition to A posteriori, which translates literally as “from what comes before”.  It is used to describe a type of knowledge that rests on justification that is independent of experience.

Examples of a priori statements are ones that are necessarily true, such as 1+1=2 and all bachelors are unmarried men.
